Peru officially opened its embassy in Abu Dhabi yesterday, a significant milestone that highlights the deepening partnership between the Republic of Peru and the United Arab Emirates. The inauguration ceremony was led by Elmer Schialer Salcedo, Peru’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, and attended by Ahmed bin Ali Al Sayegh, UAE Minister of State, alongside Ambassador Alberto Alejandro Farje Orna, members of the diplomatic corps, business leaders, and representatives of the Peruvian community in the UAE.
Early Diplomatic Engagements with UAE Authorities
Ahead of the embassy’s inauguration, Minister Salcedo held a meeting with senior UAE government authorities. He was received by H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, in Abu Dhabi. During their discussions, both sides explored avenues to strengthen bilateral relations and enhance cooperation across several sectors, including economic, trade, and investment, in support of the developmental priorities of both countries. Sheikh Abdullah welcomed Salcedo’s visit and expressed eagerness to deepen the distinguished partnership between Peru and the UAE.

A Strategic Partnership
During the inauguration, Foreign Minister Salcedo described the establishment of the embassy as a reflection of the strong bonds of friendship between the two nations. He emphasized the UAE’s role as a strategic partner for Peru and expressed hope for further strengthening of the partnership to serve the interests of both countries. Salcedo extended his gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his pivotal role in advancing bilateral relations.
Expanding Economic and Cultural Ties
The opening of the embassy comes at a time when trade between Peru and the UAE has reached approximately $2.5 billion annually, underscoring the robust economic ties that have developed in recent years. The Peruvian Foreign Minister highlighted the dedicated efforts of entrepreneurs from both countries, which have resulted in a growing presence of Emirati companies in Peru and vice versa.
Salcedo also stressed the importance of establishing a clear and stable legal framework to foster a favorable environment for investors and businesspeople from both nations. Transparent regulations and equal opportunities, he noted, are essential for continued growth and cooperation.
Beyond economics, the minister spoke about the deep cultural connections between Peru and the UAE. He noted that Peruvian culture, shaped by Spanish heritage, has also been influenced by ancient Arab civilization-a legacy visible in the Spanish language’s many Arabic-origin words. This cultural commonality, Salcedo said, serves as a bridge for greater intellectual and cultural understanding between the two peoples.
Looking Ahead: Collaboration in Innovation and Energy
Peru is keen to expand cooperation with the UAE in science, technology, and renewable energy. The minister praised the UAE’s global leadership in artificial intelligence and academic research and expressed interest in transferring this expertise to Peru. He also highlighted Peru’s significant potential in renewable energy, particularly wind and solar, and looked forward to working with the UAE, home to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), to develop clean energy projects.
A New Chapter in Bilateral Relations
The inauguration of the Peruvian Embassy in Abu Dhabi marks a new chapter in the relationship between Peru and the UAE. Both nations have reaffirmed their commitment to advancing bilateral ties, fostering greater progress, prosperity, and development across areas of mutual interest.
With the embassy now open, the stage is set for even closer collaboration in trade, investment, culture, and innovation-solidifying the partnership between Peru and the UAE for years to come.
