With the official opening of its embassy in the United Arab Emirates, on 28 of April, Peru reinforces its commitment to global engagement and positions itself as a dynamic partner in one of the world’s most strategic regions. Leading this new chapter is H.E. Alberto Alejandro Farje Orna, Ambassador of Peru to the UAE, who brings a forward-looking vision focused on expanding economic, political, and cultural bridges between Peru and the Gulf.
In this exclusive interview with LatinGulf.ae, Ambassador Farje Orna highlights Peru’s growing role on the global stage: an open economy with vast resources, a young and talented workforce, strategic access to both the Pacific and Atlantic markets, and a deep-rooted cultural heritage that resonates beyond borders.
Through the opening of the embassy in Abu Dhabi, Peru invites the Gulf to discover a country of opportunity — a hub for investment, innovation, trade, tourism, and strategic partnerships.
This historic move is not just about diplomacy; it is about building lasting alliances for a future of shared growth, vision, and prosperity.
What does the official opening of an embassy in the United Arab Emirates represent for Peru, and how is this decision projected in terms of foreign policy?
The opening of our embassy in Abu Dhabi represents a milestone in Peru’s foreign policy, particularly in strengthening our presence in such a dynamic and strategic region as the Gulf. Especially with the United Arab Emirates, a country that has undergone great transformation and evolution in recent years.
This step reflects a long-term State vision: to diversify our international relations, build bridges with emerging centers of economic and political power, and consolidate our insertion into an increasingly multipolar world.
For Peru, establishing a permanent diplomatic mission in the United Arab Emirates means not only intensifying bilateral ties, but also having an active platform of presence in the Arab world, with the capacity to promote commercial interests, attract investment, and generate technical and cultural cooperation. It is, in short, a commitment to a more ambitious, modern, and coherent relationship aligned with the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
What will be the main areas of cooperation that you seek to promote from the embassy, especially in sectors such as trade, investment, tourism, and culture?
From our embassy in Abu Dhabi, we will promote a multifaceted agenda, with an emphasis on key sectors that can have a direct impact on Peru’s development. In trade and investment, we will actively promote the access of Peruvian products to the Emirati market — such as high-quality foods, minerals, and value-added goods — as well as opportunities in strategic sectors like energy, infrastructure, agribusiness, and clean technologies.
In tourism, we want to position Peru as an attractive destination for a sophisticated visitor, interested both in our millenary history and in experiences of luxury and sustainability.
In culture, we seek to build bridges between our civilizations, highlighting the common aspects of our values, drawing parallels between our cultural expressions, and fostering mutual knowledge as the foundation for a strong long-term friendship.
There is genuine interest in the Andean and Amazonian heritage, as well as possibilities for intercultural dialogue between our traditions. Additionally, we do not rule out exploring cooperation in innovation, education, digital transformation, and food security — all priority areas for both parties.

From your diplomatic experience, how do you perceive the Arab world’s interest in Latin America, and what role do you believe Peru can play in this new geopolitical scenario?
The Arab world’s interest in Latin America is growing steadily. It is a strategic interest, both economically and politically and culturally. The Gulf countries, particularly the United Arab Emirates, are diversifying their global alliances and see in our region a partner with enormous potential: natural resources, young human capital, democratic stability, and opportunities in key sectors such as food, energy, and logistics.
In this context, Peru can and must play a leadership role. We are an open economy, with a broad network of free trade agreements, a strategic location in the Pacific, and a historical vocation for integration. We are a reliable and competitive partner for the Gulf countries, and also a gateway to South America. The key lies in projecting a clear, proactive, and strategic image of Peru.
Finally, what will be the central message you wish to convey during the inauguration ceremony on April 28, both to the Peruvian community and to the local authorities?
During the ceremony, my message will be one of confidence, commitment, and shared vision. To the Peruvian community in the Emirates, I will say that this embassy is your home. We want to be close to you, support you, and ensure that your presence here contributes to Peru’s prestige.
To the local authorities, we will express our deep gratitude for their hospitality and openness. We will convey Peru’s firm desire to build a strong, lasting, and mutually beneficial relationship based on respect, cooperation, and a vision for the future.
Today, we are not only opening a diplomatic headquarters; we are opening a new stage in our bilateral history, with the conviction that together, we can create real opportunities for our peoples.
