Argentina, Chile, Perú, and Bolivia have reached a significant milestone in the global mineral supply landscape by signing a joint agreement aimed at guaranteeing the global supply of strategic minerals. The declaration, signed by the highest mining authorities of the four countries during a gathering in Santiago, sets a clear focus on promoting sustainable development, technical cooperation, and responsible investment. This landmark alliance seeks to position the Southern Cone as a key player in supplying critical minerals worldwide, especially in light of the increasing global demand driven by decarbonization, electromobility, and artificial intelligence.
The agreement particularly underscores the pivotal role of copper mining, with Argentina’s Secretary of Mining, Luis Lucero, highlighting that the region could produce more than half of the world’s copper. “Argentina will be part of a region that generates more than half of the planet’s copper,” he said. This is not only due to the region’s exceptional geological prospects but also its historically peaceful nature in international relations, presenting a historic opportunity armed with mineral projects expected to last up to 70 years.
