Guatemala Strengthens Airport Infrastructure to Attract International Investment

GUATEMALA CITY — Guatemala is strengthening the infrastructure and operational conditions of its main international gateway as part of a broader strategy to attract foreign direct investment and improve the country’s connection with global markets.

For international companies evaluating new investment destinations, factors such as air connectivity, infrastructure, security and access to international markets are increasingly important. Against this backdrop, Guatemala’s Ministry of Economy and the National Foreign Direct Investment Attraction Agency, ProGuatemala, are supporting efforts to improve the country’s civil aviation infrastructure.

Economy Minister Gabriela García, together with the ProGuatemala team, recently participated in a visit to La Aurora International Airport as part of the Public-Private Interinstitutional Working Group for the Improvement of Civil Aviation.

The visit included a tour led by José Fernando Suriano Buezo, Vice Minister of Transport; Captain Tomás Aldecoa, Director General of Civil Aeronautics; and airport administration personnel. Participants reviewed key areas of the terminal and examined infrastructure and operational systems supporting airport security and efficiency.

Among the areas visited were the airport’s CCTV surveillance system, X-ray equipment, security procedures, operational processes and cleaning services. The review forms part of a coordinated effort involving public institutions and private-sector stakeholders to strengthen the airport’s overall performance.

Connectivity as an Investment Advantage

For ProGuatemala, improving the conditions of La Aurora International Airport goes beyond the tourism sector. A modern, secure and efficient airport is also a strategic asset for companies considering Guatemala as a regional base.

Greater air connectivity can facilitate business travel, international trade, logistics and connections between executives, suppliers and customers. In this context, strengthening the country’s principal airport contributes to Guatemala’s broader competitiveness as an investment destination.

The initiative reflects a coordinated approach between Guatemala’s Ministry of Economy, ProGuatemala and civil aviation authorities, seeking to create an environment that is more competitive, connected and attractive for companies looking to establish or expand operations in the country.

As Guatemala continues to position itself as a gateway between North and Central America and international markets, improvements to critical infrastructure such as La Aurora International Airport are becoming an increasingly important component of its investment strategy.

For international investors, connectivity is not simply an infrastructure issue—it is part of the business environment.
