For the 13th edition of the Sikka Art Fair, the Dubai Culture’s flagship initiative that takes place in Al Shindagha Historic District. In this edition, which started Friday, January 31st, the alleys of the historic district of Dubai are filled with art exhibitions, installations, musical performances, local grown food vendors and workshops for all ages. Bringing together some of the best talent of UAE and GCC.
One of them is the Mexican artist Jose Roberto, whom has been based in Dubai for the last 4 years. For this event he created Surreal Land, an immersive experience, which follows the 100th anniversary of the surrealist movement foundation.
Jose created handmade murals using elements of old Dubai and new Dubai, mixed with a surrealist modern style. In Surreal Land you can find representation of elements such as the pearls, Dubai frame, the falcons, a horse, hamour fish and skyscrapers made with the same technique as the mud houses at the historic district where the installation takes place.
Since a very young age, Jose Roberto was in contact with paintings of artists like Remedios Varo & Leonora Carrington, whom took the essence of the movement to establish permanently in Mexico, in the words of Salvador Dali, a country more surreal than his paintings. This encounters inspired Jose Roberto not only for creating art but also as a way of transiting this world.
Visitors are delighted to find this innovative installation that brings not only an immersive journey through dreamy settings which share a modern display of surrealist art.
Sikka Art Fair will be open until Sunday, February 9th – so you can still visit during this week, every day from 4pm to 11pm.
