NDS is the leading walnut exporter in southern Chile, integrating production, packing, and export operations under a single vision. As growers, packers, and exporters, the company is committed to bringing the very best of Chilean agriculture to tables across all five continents, combining high added value with the distinctive quality and origin seal of southern Chile.
With a strong client-oriented approach, NDS goes beyond supply, actively supporting its partners in the development and growth of their markets. In this interview, Carlos Leiva shares insights into NDS’s export strategy, its value proposition, and the role of origin-driven differentiation in today’s global walnut industry.
Can you introduce NDS and its diversified nuts offering?
We are producers, processors, and exporters of walnuts and hazelnuts. Our company is the southernmost player in Chile’s walnut industry, which clearly identifies and differentiates us from the rest. We produce and export walnuts and hazelnuts worldwide, both in-shell and shelled, mechanically or hand-cracked, and in different sizes.
How do walnuts and hazelnuts complement each other within your export strategy?
Although both are nuts, they differ significantly in terms of usage and end consumers. However, they also share certain markets, final uses, and production and logistics lines. Offering both products allows us to reach a broader audience and better serve diverse market needs.
What processing capabilities support your kernel production?
In addition to operating our own orchards, our plant is equipped with a very modern grading, cracking, and sorting line, operated by highly qualified personnel.
How do you manage supply reliability for international buyers?
We hold BRC A certification, which covers the entire process from our orchards to the dispatch of the finished product, ensuring the food safety and reliability of our products.
What opportunities do you see for mixed nut portfolios in the Gulf region?
We already supply mixed product portfolios to several markets, such as Spain, Germany, and Italy. However, we are currently exploring new alternatives for mixed portfolios, one of them being India, where there is already strong demand for Chilean walnuts and where we believe there is significant potential for hazelnuts.
