The United Arab Emirates and Ecuador share a growing and dynamic bilateral relationship, rooted in mutual respect and a shared vision for sustainable development and economic diversification. Despite the geographical distance, both nations have cultivated strong ties across multiple sectors, including trade, investment, renewable energy, infrastructure, and cultural exchange.

Over the years, the UAE has emerged as a key partner for Ecuador, with significant investments such as Dubai Ports World’s operations in Ecuador, showcasing the deepening economic collaboration between the two countries. In return, Ecuador has shown increasing interest in the UAE’s innovative solutions in areas like food and water security, sustainable development, and technological advancements.

High-level visits and agreements, including visa facilitation measures and air connectivity initiatives, have further strengthened people-to-people and business-to-business connections. These efforts are complemented by joint aspirations to negotiate a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), signaling a commitment to expanding bilateral trade and fostering long-term growth.

Ecuadorian Foreign Minister’s Official Visit Strengthens UAE-Ecuador Ties

Abu Dhabi, 7th December 2024 – María Gabriela Sommerfeld Rosero, Ecuador’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility, conducted an official visit to the United Arab Emirates, highlighting the strengthening relationship between the two nations. During her visit, she met with Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, to discuss opportunities for collaboration across key sectors and further deepen bilateral ties.

Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, met with María Gabriela Sommerfeld Rosero, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility of Ecuador, during her official visit to the UAE.

The discussions focused on advancing cooperation in areas such as renewable energy, infrastructure development, food and water security, mining, tourism, and investment. Minister Al Hashimy emphasized the growing economic partnership between the UAE and Ecuador, particularly citing the significant role of Dubai Ports World (DP World) investments in Ecuador. These initiatives reflect both nations’ commitment to economic diversification and mutual prosperity despite geographical distances.

Two significant agreements were signed during the visit: a Memorandum of Understanding on visa exemptions for diplomatic and official passport holders and an Air Services Agreement. These agreements aim to enhance tourism, cultural exchange, and trade connectivity while fostering closer ties between their people.

The ministers also celebrated the initiation of Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) negotiations, marking an important step in bolstering trade and economic collaboration.

As part of her visit, Minister Rosero toured prominent landmarks, including Wahat Al Karama, where she honored the sacrifices of UAE martyrs, and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, a testament to the UAE’s rich heritage. She also visited Masdar City, exploring the UAE’s innovation in sustainability.

Furthering institutional ties, Rosero engaged with key organizations such as the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) and DP World’s Jebel Ali Free Zone Authority (JAFZA), identifying areas for potential collaboration and strengthening economic bonds.

The delegation was greeted by hashtag#Masdar representatives led by our COO, Abdulaziz Alobaidli. Together, they explored opportunities for collaboration on hashtag#RenewableEnergy projects,

Rosero expressed her heartfelt gratitude to H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, for his hospitality and support of the Ecuadorian delegation.

This official visit underscores the growing partnership between the UAE and Ecuador, paving the way for enhanced cooperation in trade, investment, and cultural exchange.
