With more than eight decades of experience, Prunesco has established itself as a global benchmark in the prune industry. As the largest prune processor in Latin America and one of the top three worldwide, the company combines scale, expertise, and innovation to deliver premium-quality prunes to more than 55 countries. In this interview, Marcelo Lacunza shares insights into Prunesco’s leadership, its commitment to sustainability and quality, and how the company continues to innovate while bringing the best of Chilean prunes to international markets.
Could you introduce Prunesco and its prune-based solutions?
Founded in 1941 by a group of producers seeking better export conditions, the company has experienced steady growth over the years, establishing itself today as the largest exporter in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the three largest worldwide. We specialize in dried prunes, exporting both organic and conventional fruit, as well as prune juice concentrate and prune purée. We have strong expertise in the development and commercialization of Private Label programs for retail, supplying more than 15 supermarket chains in countries as diverse as China, Taiwan, Finland, Austria, and Australia. We export directly to more than 50 countries, bringing the best Chilean prunes to the world.
What differentiates organic and tenderized prunes?
Organic and conventional prunes differ in their cultivation methods, while tenderization is a post-drying process that improves the fruit’s texture. Tenderized prunes can be either organic or conventional.
How are prune purée and prune juice concentrate used in the food industry?
Prune purée and prune juice concentrate are used as natural ingredients to provide flavor, sweetness, color, fiber, and functionality. They are widely applied in bakery and confectionery products, yogurts and dairy items, juices and beverages, sauces, baby food, and health products.
What advantages does Chile offer for organic production?
Chile has unique geographical conditions—mountains, desert, ocean, and glaciers—that act as natural barriers, reducing pest and disease pressure. These conditions are favorable for the production of both organic and conventional dried prunes. In addition, a suitable climate, ample water availability from Andes Mountain sources, high sanitary standards, and solid export experience facilitate compliance with demanding international certifications.
What growth opportunities do you see in the Gulf region?
The Gulf region, particularly the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, offers significant growth opportunities driven by strong purchasing power, high dependence on food imports, and a growing demand for healthy, natural, and high-quality products. We see strong potential in premium prunes, organic prunes, and the development of Private Label programs for retail and food service, with the region also acting as a regional redistribution hub.
