The Concept Behind Reminiscencia
The genesis of Reminiscencia can be traced back to the solitude experienced during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. Sitting alone in front of his computer, Vaca Valenzuela delved into the digital realm, searching for maps of his hometown, Santiago. His quest was not merely geographical; it aimed to capture the essence of specific locations at different moments in time, particularly those surrounding his neighborhood near the city center, a place rich in both festive gatherings and passionate protests.
As he engaged in this digital excavation, Vaca Valenzuela reached out to the public, inviting individuals to share their memories of the public spaces that hold significance for them. This initiative yielded an outpouring of personal testimonies, illuminating the profound connections individuals have with their environments. Additionally, the artist’s visits to his grandparents provided further layers of narrative as they recounted their own memories, intertwining their stories with those of the wider community.
An Invitation to Reflect
Reminiscencia serves as a collage of these intimate recollections and collective struggles, prompting audience members to reflect on the nature of memory and its ties to specific places. The presentation invites attendees to pause in their pursuit of time and instead listen to the voices that reside within them, encouraging a reconnection with the fragments of memory that linger in their minds.
Vaca Valenzuela’s work offers a unique opportunity to explore how personal and collective narratives shape our understanding of place and identity, making it a must-see event for those interested in contemporary art and cultural reflection.
