Brazil’s Presidential Race Intensifies: Lula and Flavio Bolsonaro Head to Run-Off After Tight First Round

Brazil’s closely watched presidential election is set for a dramatic second round between leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro. This prolonged, deeply polarised race carries significant implications for the country and the broader region.

Brazil’s electoral court confirmed that these two candidates will advance to a run-off on October 25 after neither secured the majority needed to win the presidency outright. In a surprisingly close tally, Bolsonaro led with 56 million votes compared to Lula’s nearly 53 million.
