Introduction & Background:
► Your Excellency, you are known globally as the “Green Sheikh.” Could you share with our readers the journey that led to this title and what inspired your passion for environmental activism?
One winter day when I was about six years old, I went on a hunting expedition with my father. Eager to follow in his footsteps, I said, “Father, I want to learn how to hunt with a falcon and become a falconer like you.” He smiled, looked at me, and replied, “My son, your time will be different from mine. I want you to focus on something bigger than yourself and your life. In time, you will discover your passion. I won’t tell you what it is, but I can show you. Because, in truth, you are the falcon.”
This profound conversation left a lasting impression on me. Over the years, through my own journey—my “green adventure” through the many facets of life—I’ve learned to deeply respect nature, nurture it, and protect the environment. What began with falconry turned into a deeper wisdom about the balance within ecosystems and the importance of conservation. Today, my goal is not only to protect the environment but to help create a world where nature can sustain itself.
I achieve this by sharing my passion with both current and future generations, mentoring young leaders and visionaries who can carry forward the message of environmental stewardship. Through these efforts, I aim to help preserve Earth’s natural resources and ensure their continued flourishing.
Before I was recognized as a Sheikh, or the “Green Sheikh”, I simply saw myself as a human being—an ordinary person with a deep commitment to extraordinary action, shaped by my experiences, education, and the influence of nature and the people around me.
Born on October 10, 1966, I was given the name Abdulaziz after my great-grandfather. As I grew older, however, my connection to nature led me to adopt the title “Green Sheikh”, which symbolizes my dedication to environmental causes. This title has inspired not just me, but countless others whom I’ve worked with in the pursuit of environmental preservation, responsible use of natural resources, and the prevention of environmental degradation. These efforts are guided by the principle of “doing good and preventing harm”, a natural law that I have come to deeply respect and embody.
Over the years, people in both the East and the West have often questioned why I chose to go “green.” In the East, some wondered why a Sheikh, specifically a Green Sheikh, would focus so much on environmentalism. In the West, many were perplexed that someone from an oil-rich Arab country would advocate for sustainability. But for me, it’s simple: growing up in the UAE, surrounded by the desert, sea, and mountains, I developed a respect for the environment from a young age.
It wasn’t until after I graduated with degrees in Petroleum and Chemical Engineering that I truly understood the urgency of sustainability. My further studies in Environmental Sciences and Management, and later my PhD, deepened my understanding of the environmental challenges we face. Traveling the world and engaging with diverse communities opened my eyes to how interconnected we are with nature. Seeing the devastating impacts of climate change, pollution, and resource depletion on vulnerable populations only strengthened my resolve to act.
I embraced the title of “Green Sheikh” because it represents my commitment to a sustainable future for both the UAE and the world. It stands for a way of life that balances progress with preservation. Through my work, I aim to inspire others to take action, reconnect with nature, and live in harmony with the environment.

Current & Future:
► You have led various initiatives for environmental conservation and youth empowerment across the globe. Could you highlight some of the key projects you are most proud of and the impact they have had?
Over the years, I’ve been involved in various initiatives focused on environmental conservation and youth empowerment, and several stand out for their lasting impact.
One of the key initiatives is the Sustainability Majlis, which brings together leaders, thinkers, and youth across the UAE to discuss sustainability, climate change, and environmental preservation. The Sustainability Majlis serves as a platform for dialogue, idea exchange, and creating actionable solutions for the UAE’s environmental challenges. It has inspired countless young leaders to take on sustainability projects and actively contribute to their communities.
Another significant project is the Green School Initiative, which encourages schools to adopt sustainable practices. These include reducing energy consumption, promoting recycling, and integrating environmental education into the curriculum. The initiative has raised awareness among students, teachers, and parents about sustainability and has created a culture of environmental responsibility in participating schools.
The Blue Youth project for COP22 in Morocco was another milestone that aligned with my commitment to youth empowerment and environmental conservation. The project focused on engaging young people to address the critical issues facing our climate change and oceans while fostering leadership in sustainability. Marine conservation was a key theme, as oceans regulate the climate and support ecosystems, yet they are often overlooked in climate discussions. The Blue Youth initiative sought to bring attention to the urgent need to protect marine environments from threats like pollution and overfishing.
My role in this project involved mentoring young leaders and guiding them to understand the interconnectedness of ecosystems and the impact of climate change on both land and sea. We worked on solutions that could be implemented at the community level and advocated for policy changes at the international level. I encouraged the youth to act locally while thinking globally, showing that small, consistent actions can lead to significant impact over time.
The Blue Youth initiative also had strong cultural components. We engaged young people worldwide to raise awareness about water security, climate change, and ocean conservation through art, music, and other creative forms. These expressions helped connect people emotionally to the cause and reach a wider audience beyond policy and science discussions. By the end of COP22, Blue Youth succeeded in making youth voices heard on the global stage, with young leaders advocating for marine protection as a key part of climate action. It was inspiring to see the next generation embrace environmental stewardship for the planet’s future.
In the UAE, I have been heavily involved in tree-planting campaigns, particularly in desert areas, to combat desertification and promote biodiversity. These campaigns, in partnership with local organizations, focus on planting native trees like the resilient Mangrove, which plays a crucial role in maintaining ecosystems. These efforts not only enhance the environment but also raise awareness of the importance of conserving the UAE’s natural heritage.
Another meaningful initiative I’ve supported is WAYOUT Water Solutions, which was highlighted during Expo 2020 in Dubai. This project delivers sustainable water purification solutions to underserved communities. Clean water access is a critical global issue, and WAYOUT’s decentralized purification systems provide life-changing solutions in regions where clean water is scarce. This project demonstrates the intersection of technology, sustainability, and humanitarian efforts, making a profound impact on communities in need.
On a global scale, one initiative dear to me is my participation in Rwanda’s Kwita Izina gorilla naming ceremony, an effort focused on wildlife conservation, specifically for endangered mountain gorillas. Naming a baby gorilla, “Nayombi”, strengthened my commitment to protecting wildlife and deepened my connection to Africa’s ecosystems. This project has raised awareness of the importance of protecting endangered species and supporting sustainable tourism in Rwanda.
The ripple effect of these projects, both locally and globally, has been inspiring. Whether through youth-led initiatives or conservation efforts, I believe true change begins by empowering communities to take ownership of their environment. I am proud to have played a role in fostering that change.

This project highlights the importance of biodiversity and the interconnectedness of ecosystems, showing how wildlife preservation is essential to maintaining the balance of nature and aligns with my vision of global environmental responsibility.
In the area of wellness and nature, I recently led a session titled “Your Health and Nature” in Madinat Al Dhanna, which focused on integrating mental health with nature. This initiative emphasized the role of nature in promoting overall wellness, combining practical exercises, light training programs, and discussions on mental well-being in the workplace. My vision is to foster a world where both mental and physical health are nurtured through a deep connection to the natural environment, building personal and environmental resilience.
Lastly, I am working on a podcast series titled “Your Sustainability with the Green Sheikh”, which shares sustainability stories and practical advice, especially for Gulf and Arab communities. Each episode, lasting around 3 minutes, focuses on actionable sustainability tips that individuals can easily incorporate into their lives. This project fits seamlessly into my vision of spreading awareness and inspiring small, meaningful actions that together can have a significant global impact.
All of these projects reflect my broader commitment to sustainability, whether through education, conservation, wellness, or community development. My ultimate goal is to see environmental consciousness woven into every action, decision, and lifestyle, creating a future that is not only sustainable but nurturing for all living beings.
Vision & Challenges:
► In your experience, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced while promoting environmental awareness in the UAE and abroad? How have you overcome them?
As the Green Sheikh, I’ve faced several challenges promoting environmental awareness, both in the UAE and internationally. A key challenge has been shifting mindsets, particularly in regions where economic growth takes priority. Many view sustainability as secondary or believe it requires significant lifestyle changes. To overcome this, I emphasize education and small, practical actions that make sustainability accessible without compromising comfort or progress. I also focus on youth engagement, as they are often more open to change and can inspire others.
Resistance to change is another challenge, as people are often hesitant to adopt new practices like renewable energy or water conservation. I address this by promoting gradual, easy-to-implement solutions and highlighting the long-term benefits, such as cost savings and improved quality of life. Celebrating small successes, like community cleanups or energy-saving initiatives, helps keep momentum and enthusiasm alive.
Globally, the challenge has been making sustainability relevant to local needs. I tailor my approach to each community, focusing on how environmental efforts can improve specific local issues like clean water or green jobs. By framing sustainability as a solution to immediate challenges, I’m able to engage people more effectively.
Balancing tradition and modern sustainability practices has also been important, especially in the UAE, where cultural heritage is closely tied to the environment. I bridge this gap by showing how traditional practices often align with modern sustainability efforts, fostering a sense of continuity rather than disruption.
Finally, through being a good example, creative education, practical solutions, and a focus on long-term impact, I’ve been able to overcome these challenges and inspire positive change.
