Colombia celebrates its first official National Day in the UAE

On August 9, 2024, Colombia marked a historic milestone by celebrating its National Day officially for the first time in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The grand event was held at the prestigious Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental in Abu Dhabi, drawing a diverse crowd of diplomats, Emirati authorities, business leaders, and members of the Hispanic community.

Colombian Ambassador Luis Miguel Merlano delivered a heartfelt speech, emphasizing the robust and multifaceted relationship between Colombia and the UAE. He highlighted the recent launch of Emirates airline’s direct flight from Dubai to Bogotá, which has significantly enhanced connectivity, fostering tourism and trade between the two nations. The ambassador also mentioned the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) signed in April 2024, aimed at boosting economic and cultural ties.

Merlano underscored the collaborative efforts in various sectors, including artificial intelligence, supercomputing, environment, technology, education, health, and culture. He praised the UAE’s investments in renewable energy and sustainable agriculture in Colombia, which have not only strengthened economic bonds but also promoted sustainable development.

The celebration was a vibrant showcase of Colombia’s rich cultural heritage. The highlight of the evening was the performance of ‘Travesía’ by the Cayena Colfolk company, which captivated the audience with a journey through Colombia’s diverse regions. Traditional dance performances and a tasting of authentic Colombian cuisine added to the festive atmosphere, offering guests a true taste of Colombian culture.

The event featured several notable activities:

  • Traditional Dance Performances: Various Colombian dance groups performed traditional dances, showcasing the country’s diverse cultural heritage.
  • Colombian Cuisine: Guests enjoyed a variety of Colombian dishes, providing a culinary journey through the country’s flavors.
  • Art Exhibitions: The event included exhibitions of Colombian art, highlighting the country’s artistic talent and cultural richness.

A Promising Future

The event concluded on a high note, with Ambassador Merlano expressing optimism about the future of Colombia-UAE relations. He reiterated the commitment to further strengthening ties and exploring new avenues of cooperation. The successful celebration of Colombia’s National Day in Abu Dhabi not only marked a significant diplomatic achievement but also laid the foundation for a deeper, more dynamic partnership between the two countries.
