Brazil’s Remarkable Achievement

In a world where sustainable energy is gaining prominence, Brazil stands out as a shining example. According to the latest findings from the global energy think tank Ember, Brazil achieved an astounding 89% of its electricity generation from renewable sources in 20231. This impressive feat places Brazil at the forefront of the clean energy transition within the G20, demonstrating how rapid growth in renewables can significantly reduce emissions while meeting the ever-increasing demand for electricity.

The Brazilian Model

1. Diverse Renewable Mix

Brazil owes its success to a well-balanced mix of renewable energy sources. Here’s a closer look:

  • Hydropower: Brazil has long relied on its robust hydroelectric base. Although the share of hydro fluctuates due to varying weather conditions, it still accounted for 60% of Brazil’s electricity in 2023. This consistent contribution has been a cornerstone of the country’s renewable energy success.
  • Solar Power: Brazil’s solar generation has witnessed remarkable growth. In 2023, solar provided 7.3% of the country’s electricity, a substantial increase from previous years. The latest data shows continued strong growth in solar energy, positioning Brazil ahead of other G20 nations in this domain.
  • Wind Energy: Brazil is also a leader in wind power. During the same period, wind energy contributed 14% to the electricity mix, surpassing the G20 average. Brazil’s commitment to expanding wind farms has paid off, making wind a significant player in its renewable portfolio.

2. Rapid Expansion

Brazil recorded the world’s second-largest annual increase in wind and solar generation in 2023, trailing only China. Solar generation, in particular, saw a staggering 72% growth, reaching 52 TWh. The country’s solar share surged beyond that of other G20 nations, demonstrating Brazil’s commitment to harnessing the sun’s energy.

3. Global Implications

Brazil’s success story holds valuable lessons for other G20 countries. By following Brazil’s lead, nations can accelerate their transition to sustainable energy futures. The global average for renewable electricity stands at 30%, making Brazil’s 89% all the more remarkable1. As the world grapples with climate change, Brazil’s green power surge serves as an inspiration for policymakers, businesses, and citizens alike.

Conclusion

Brazil’s journey toward a greener future is a testament to what can be achieved when determination meets innovation. As the G20 nations seek ways to reduce their carbon footprint, Brazil’s renewable energy model provides a beacon of hope. Let’s celebrate Brazil’s achievement and continue working together to create a planet powered by clean, sustainable energy.
