Swinging for Glory: UAE Golfers Aim High at The Open

As the 152nd Open approaches, golfers from around the world are gearing up for this prestigious Major. Held at the historic Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland from 18th to 21st July, the tournament promises thrilling action and fierce competition.

Regional Qualifying rounds have concluded, and The Open Qualifying Series across various tours has determined the final field of competitors. However, for those seeking a last chance to secure their spot, the 36-hole Final Qualifying awaits on Tuesday, 2nd July 2024. Golfers will battle it out on one of four challenging courses: Burnham and Berrow, Dundonald Links, Royal Cinque Ports, or West Lancashire.

With a minimum of 16 Open places up for grabs, the stakes are high.

As the 152nd Open draws near, golf enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the final Major of the year. The tournament, set to take place at the historic Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland from 18th to 21st July, promises intense competition and thrilling moments.

Among the players vying for a spot in The Open, several have strong UAE connections. Let’s take a closer look at some notable participants:

  1. Thomas Detry (Belgium): Currently ranked 27th in the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Rankings, Detry, a Dubai resident, aims to secure his place in the championship.
  2. Garrick Porteous (England): Another Dubai resident, Porteous has fond memories of Royal Cinque Ports, the qualifying venue. He previously clinched victory in the 2013 Amateur Championship.
  3. Anirban Lahiri (India) and Joshua Grenville-Wood (UAE): These players will compete at Burnham and Berrow, hoping to earn their Open spots. Joining them is former Major winner Justin Rose (England).
  4. Ewen Ferguson (Scotland) and Rafa Cabrera Bello (Spain): Dundonald Links hosts their battle for qualification. Meanwhile, LIV Golf players, including Carlos Ortiz (Mexico), Sergio Garcia (Spain), Jason Kokrak (USA), and Marc Leishman (Australia), tee off at West Lancashire.

Additionally, there’s a safety net for some golfers: The first five DP World Tour members and any Race to Dubai members tying for fifth place, not otherwise exempt, in the top 20 of the Race to Dubai Rankings after the 2024 BMW International (concluding on July 7th, 2024) will also gain exemption to The Open.

Stay tuned for an exhilarating championship as these talented golfers vie for their place in golfing history
