Cargill/Pollos El Bucanero achieves historic first for Colombia’s poultry exports
In a significant milestone for Colombia’s agribusiness sector, Cargill/Pollos El Bucanero S.A. has received authorization for its Villa Gorgona facility in Candelaria (Valle del Cauca) as the country’s first plant approved to export frozen halal chicken to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This accreditation marks a historic achievement for the Colombian poultry industry, opening doors to new international markets and establishing Colombia as a prominent player in halal food exports.
According to a public statement by Luis Miguel Merlano Hoyos, Ambassador of the Republic of Colombia to UAE, this accomplishment “marks a historic step for the country’s poultry sector. This achievement highlights the strong potential of Colombian products in the Emirati market and further strengthens the trade relationship between Colombia and the UAE.” The green light for Villa Gorgona not only benefits Pollos El Bucanero, but also sets a precedent and serves as a model for other Colombian agrifood exporters aspiring to reach international halal markets.
This development demonstrates the enormous potential of Colombian poultry products and fosters the growing commercial ties between Colombia and the United Arab Emirates. Additionally, it reflects years of collaboration between government agencies, the private sector, and international partners. The success is supported by organizations such as the Embassy of Colombia in the UAE, the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cancillería de Colombia), the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, as well as UAE institutions including the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment and business partners like Farzana and Emirates Flight Catering.
The Colombian Embassy in the UAE and its related commercial office have reaffirmed their ongoing commitment to expand opportunities for Colombian exports throughout the Gulf region, aiming to position more Colombian products on international shelves.
This landmark achievement not only bolsters Colombia’s export portfolio but also paves the way for the nation’s ambition to become a leading exporter of high-quality poultry. The recognition of the Villa Gorgona plant underscores the country’s adherence to international standards and its ability to meet the demanding requirements of premium global markets such as that of the UAE.
