Colombia Receives the International Award for Best Practices in Sustainable Development in Dubai
In a significant achievement that highlights global efforts towards sustainable urban development, Colombia has been recognized with the International Award for Best Practices in Sustainable Development at the prestigious Dubai International Best Practices Award. Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, the 14th edition of this award took place during the World Governments Summit (WGS) 2026.
This year’s edition witnessed record-breaking participation, with more than 3,000 submissions from 152 countries, further cementing Dubai’s reputation as a global hub for the exchange of ideas and a leader in promoting sustainable initiatives worldwide.
Among the standout entries, Colombia was celebrated for its Ciénaga de Mallorquín restoration initiative in the city of Barranquilla. The project earned high praise for its comprehensive approach to urban regeneration and ecosystem restoration. Specifically, it focuses on the recovery of more than 740 hectares of wetlands and green areas through the reforestation of mangroves, complemented by the development of public spaces that aim to enhance the livelihoods of local residents.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum underlined the award’s role as a global benchmark in recognizing innovative and sustainable urban solutions. He stated: “Our goal is for the award to inspire individuals and institutions around the world to develop practices that foster sustainable growth.”
Reflecting the growing global interest in sustainability, the 2026 edition welcomed 150 government delegations and over 6,000 attendees, underlining the UAE’s commitment to a more livable, resilient, and sustainable future.
Commenting on the significance of the event, Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, highlighted that the award showcases Dubai’s leadership in establishing inclusive urban environments. He stressed its impact in enhancing human well-being and improving quality of life around the world.
With initiatives like Colombia’s spearheading a new model of ecological and social innovation, the Dubai award continues to drive momentum in the global pursuit of sustainability.
