Colombia’s Petro Launches Strategic Middle East Tour to Boost Ties with Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Qatar

In a bid to deepen international partnerships and strengthen Colombia’s global standing, President Gustavo Petro has embarked on a significant diplomatic tour across the Middle East, visiting Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Qatar from now through November 4.

Described by the Colombian presidency as a mission to attract foreign investment and bolster the country’s ecological transition, the trip marks a strategic effort to integrate Colombia more actively into the rising influence of the Global South. Petro’s Middle East swing aligns with broader goals to position the country within a shifting global geopolitical landscape.

The initiative forms part of strengthening economic cooperation, particularly in sectors such as infrastructure, clean energy, and sustainable development — arenas that the Petro administration has labeled as critical for national transformation.

Colombia’s Strategic Pivot to Riyadh

Petro’s first stop is Riyadh, where he is engaging in bilateral meetings with Saudi officials to promote investment partnerships. At the center of the talks is green energy, especially green hydrogen, sustainable mining, and electric transport — areas aligning with both Colombia’s transition goals and Saudi Arabia’s own ”Vision 2030” economic diversification strategy.

By building ties with one of the Middle East’s most powerful financial hubs, Colombia aims to gain access to substantial sovereign wealth funds and technological resources. Petro’s economic advisors have emphasized a desire to move “beyond symbolic diplomacy” and focus on “concrete agreements that translate into employment, innovation, and long-term cooperation.”

This leg of the tour includes Colombia’s formal participation in the prestigious Future Investment Initiative (FII9), often called “Davos in the Desert” — a global gathering of political figures, business leaders, and investors committed to leveraging capital for innovation and sustainable development.

Strengthening Climate and Cultural Diplomacy in Egypt

From Saudi Arabia, Petro will travel to Egypt, underscoring Colombia’s commitment to building alliances across the Global South, particularly in the climate arena. Since participating in COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Petro has echoed calls for fair climate financing mechanisms and robust cooperation among low- and middle-income countries.

In Cairo, the Colombian President will meet his counterpart Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, as well as figures from the private sector and international organizations. Key areas of engagement include sustainability, food security, and technological exchange — in addition to exploratory agreements relating to education, culture, and multilateral diplomacy.

More than a policy visit, the trip to Egypt carries symbolic significance. Petro aims to amplify dialogue between Latin America and Africa, two continents grappling with developmental challenges yet historically limited in bilateral collaboration.

Final Stop: Peace and Prosperity Talks in Qatar

The final leg of Petro’s itinerary takes him to Qatar, where he will explore economic and strategic partnerships in cutting-edge sectors such as high technology, innovation, and air transport.

A Global Diplomatic Moment for Colombia

President Petro’s Middle East tour unfolds in the lead-up to Colombia hosting the 4th CELAC-EU Summit in Santa Marta (November 9-10), affirming the administration’s ambition to increase Colombia’s resonance in transcontinental politics and diplomacy.

As global power centers continue to diversify, Colombia under Petro is betting on deepened bilateral ties, sustainable partnerships, and a non-aligned foreign policy model to reconfigure its role in international affairs.
