Doha, Qatar – December 7, 2024: Colombia’s Foreign Minister, Luis Gilberto Murillo, represented his nation at the 22nd edition of the Doha Forum, a premier platform for global dialogue addressing critical global issues. During his participation, Minister Murillo delivered a compelling address in the panel discussion “Uniting for Change: A Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty.”
In his speech, Murillo emphasized Colombia’s commitment to eradicating hunger and inequality while fostering sustainable peace. He described the proposed alliance as a collaborative platform involving nations, international organizations, civil society, and academia to mobilize the necessary resources and knowledge for lasting global change. He stated, “This alliance will serve as a privileged space to drive long-term sustainable impact across multiple sectors.”
Minister Murillo also underscored the priorities of Colombia’s foreign policy, highlighting social development, hunger eradication, and overcoming inequalities as central pillars.
Luis Miguel Merlano Hoyos, Colombia’s Ambassador to the UAE and concurrently accredited to Qatar, Bahrain, Yemen, and Kuwait, was also attending the forum, further supporting Colombia’s presence.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
On the sidelines of the forum, the minister revisited the progress of bilateral agreements established during the Emir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani’s state visit to Bogotá. These agreements have laid a foundation for strengthening Colombia-Qatar relations, particularly in trade, investment, and cultural exchanges.
Murillo also held a bilateral meeting with Canada’s Minister of International Development, Ahmed Hussen, discussing strategic partnerships on environmental issues, energy transition, and peacebuilding efforts.
Addressing Global Challenges
The Doha Forum’s 2024 edition revolves around “The Innovation Imperative,” inviting global leaders to explore how innovation can tackle pressing challenges like food security, international peace, and economic development. Discussions have notably included the Israel-Palestine conflict, emphasizing systematic and proactive solutions for long-term sustainability and peace.
