How would you describe the current state of diplomatic relations between Colombia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE)?
The diplomatic relations between Colombia and the UAE are at an all-time high. We have made significant progress in various areas, including cultural events and economic development, exemplified by initiatives like CEPA. The Emirates is launching its first direct flight to Colombia, reflecting the UAE’s keen interest in aiding Colombia’s development across multiple sectors, such as agriculture and other industries. We are both committed to furthering this collaboration.
What key areas of cooperation and collaboration exist between the two nations, particularly in trade, investment, and cultural exchange?
We are collaborating extensively in several areas. In trade, the new direct flight will facilitate the transportation of over 14,000 tons of cargo daily, expediting the delivery of products like flowers. This also opens up tourism opportunities between the UAE and Colombia. On the governmental front, we are partnering on projects involving artificial intelligence and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Colombia, with its strategic location and resources like sugar cane, is well-positioned to become a hub for SAF production.
Colombia participated in the AIM 2024 conference. Could you share insights into the goals and expectations you had for this event?
This was Colombia’s first time participating with a stand at AIM. It was a valuable experience, allowing us to showcase our investment goals and attract interest in sectors such as reindustrialization, tourism, and agriculture. We successfully communicated our vision for bringing foreign investment into Colombia and fostering economic growth.
What specific opportunities did the AIM 2024 Congress offer for strengthening economic ties and promoting Colombian interests in the UAE?.
The AIM conference provides a platform to reinforce our mutual interest in building strong economic ties. We aim to attract investment and talent from both the UAE and Colombia, fostering a bilateral exchange that benefits both nations. This conference is an excellent opportunity to deepen our economic relationships.
How can both countries leverage their unique strengths to create mutually beneficial partnerships in sectors such as energy, technology, and tourism?
We are focusing on leveraging technology, particularly artificial intelligence, with dedicated teams working on joint AI strategies. The new direct flight will enhance tourism, and we are promoting halal-friendly environments to cater to UAE and GCC tourists. In trade, we are encouraging halal certification for Colombian products to increase their appeal in the GCC markets.
What challenges do Colombian businesses face when entering the UAE market, and how can they overcome them?
One challenge is achieving halal certification for Colombian products, but our government is addressing this to ease market entry. Additionally, establishing businesses in the UAE can be costly, and we are exploring ways to support small and medium-sized enterprises in overcoming these hurdles. Despite these challenges, our shared cultural affinities make collaboration promising.
In terms of cultural diplomacy, how does the Colombian Embassy engage with the local community in the UAE to foster understanding and friendship?
Over the past year, we have organized numerous cultural events, showcasing Colombian dance, music, literature, and art. For instance, we recently held a major event in Dubai. We are also planning activities around “La Vorágine,” a significant Colombian novel, to highlight our cultural heritage. Our goal is to create a robust cultural presence in the UAE.
What initiatives or programs are in place to promote Colombian exports and attract Emirati investments?
Through the CEPA agreement, we are facilitating investment exchanges by organizing business delegations between Colombia and the UAE. These efforts are supported by both governments and embassies, aiming to identify and maximize investment opportunities. The new direct flight will further enhance trade by reducing barriers and increasing participation in trade fairs like Gulf Food and Gulf Tech.
How does the diplomatic mission actively support Colombian entrepreneurs seeking opportunities in the UAE?
We provide comprehensive support to Colombian entrepreneurs, connecting them with relevant institutions and networks. This includes helping artists, technology companies, and local government agencies navigate the UAE market. Our efforts have already resulted in successful collaborations and awards for Colombian businesses in the UAE. We are committed to promoting Colombian talent and products, such as jewelry, flowers, cacao, and coffee, ensuring their success in this region.
